One member of our Society sent us a letter from one of his friends from Boulogne-sur-Mer, dated July 26th, 1856 in which one can read the following passage:

“After having magnetized my son, following an order from the spirits, he became a very rare medium; this according to the revelation he gave in a somnambulistic state, which I have induced him into from his own request, on May 14th last and on other four or five occasions.”

“There is no doubt to me that, when awake, my son freely speaks with the spirits that he wishes to, through his guide who in the intimacy he calls his friend; that he transports himself wherever he wishes to, in spirit. I will report a case for which I have the written proof in my hands.”

“Exactly one month ago we were both in the dining room. I was reading the course of magnetism given by Mr. Du Potet when my son took the book from me, browsing over the pages. At a given point he heard his guide saying: “Read that.” It was the adventure of a doctor from America whose spirit had visited a friend who was 15 or 20 leagues away, while asleep. After reading that my son said:

-       I wish I could do a similar journey.

-       Then, where you want to go? Asked his guide.

-       To London, to see my friends, said my son. Then he named those who he wished to visit.

-       Tomorrow is Sunday. You don’t need to get up early for work. You will sleep at eight and will enjoy London up until eight thirty. Next Friday you will receive a letter from your friends complaining about your very short visit with them.”

“In fact, on the following day, in the morning, he fell into a deep sleep. I woke him up around eight thirty. He remembered nothing. I said nothing to him, waiting for the events.”

“The following Friday I was working in one of my machines, smoking as usual since I had just had lunch. My son was observing the smoke coming out of the pipe when he said:

-       Look, there is a letter in the smoke.

-       How do you see a letter in the smoke?

-       You will see when the mailman is here.”

“In fact the mailman delivered a letter from London in which my son’s friends complained about his such short a visit, of a few minutes, on the previous Sunday, from eight to eight thirty, describing a large number of details which would take long to report here, among which there was the peculiar fact of him having had breakfast with them. I have the letter in my hands, as I said before, as a proof that I am not creating things.”

Once this tale was told one of those attending the meeting said that history registers several similar cases. He mentioned St. Alfonse of Liguori, who was canonized before the required time, for having simultaneously appeared in two different places, fact that was then considered a miracle.

St. Anthony of Padua was in Spain and while giving his sermon his father was about to be executed in Padua, accused of murder. At that very moment Anthony shows up, demonstrates his father’s innocence and reveals who the true assassin was, who later suffered the penalties. It was verified that St. Anthony was preaching in Spain, at the same time.

St. Alfonse of Liguori was evoked so that we addressed him with the following questions:

1.     The fact that justified your canonization, is that real?

-       Yes.

2.     Is that phenomenon exceptional?

-       No. It can happen to every individual who is dematerialized.

3.     Was it a fair reason for having you canonized?

-       Yes, since I had elevated myself to God, through my virtues. Without that I could not have been simultaneously transported to two different places.

4.     Should then every individual capable of such a phenomenon be canonized?

-       No, for not all are equally virtuous.

5.     Could you give us an explanation about that phenomenon?

-       Yes. When man is completely dematerialized by his own virtue; when he has elevated his soul to God, he can simultaneously appear in two places as below:

Once he starts to feel sleepy, the incarnated spirit can ask God to take him to a given place. His spirit, or his soul, however you want to call it, leaves the body, followed by part of the perispirit, leaving the dense matter in a state that is close to death. I say close to death because the link that connects the perispirit and the soul to the body remains in the body and that link cannot be defined. The body then appears in the desired place. I believe this is all you wish to know.

6.     That does not explain the visibility and tangibility of the perispirit.

-       Being detached from matter, according to his degree of elevation, the spirit can produce tangible matter.

7.     Nevertheless, the tangible apparitions of hands and other parts of the body evidently come from inferior spirits.

-       The inferior spirits serve the superior ones who wish to demonstrate the fact.

8.     Is the sleeping body a requirement so that the spirit may appear in other places?

-       The soul may divide itself when feeling transported to a place different from that where its body is located.

9.     What would happen to a man deeply asleep, whose spirit would appear somewhere else, if that person were suddenly awakened?

-       This would not happen since if someone had the intention of waking him up, the spirit would foresee the intention and would return to the body, considering that the spirit reads the thoughts.

A similar fact is reported by Tacitus:

“During the months that Vespasian spent in Alexandria, waiting for the seasonal return of the dry winds and the time when the sea becomes favorable, several prodigies took place through which the favor of heaven and the interest that the gods seemed to have for that prince manifested…Such prodigies reinforced Vespasian wishes to visit the sacred dwelling of the god, to consult with him about the issues of the empire. He commanded that the temple be closed to everyone. Having entered the temple, his mind totally concentrated on what the oracle would say, he noticed one of the main Egyptians behind him, a man by the name of Basilide, who he knew had been sick for several days in Alexandria. He inquired the priests if Basilide had come to the temple that day; he asked around to the passers-by whether they had seen him in town; he finally sent men on horse backs to find him and certify that he was eighty miles away at that very moment. Then he no longer doubted that his vision was supernatural and that Basilide had taken the oracles’ place. (Tacitus, Histories, Book IV, chap. 81 and 82, Translated by Burnouf).”

Since that fact has been communicated to us we have received several others of the same kind, from reliable sources. Among them there are some very recent ones that have occurred, say, in our environment, taking place in very interesting circumstances. Their explanations allow for a significant broadening of the psychological observations. The subject of the double men, left to the fantastic stories of the past, thus seems to have some truth in it. We shall return to this subject soon.

Phénomène de bi-corporéité.

Un des membres de la société nous communique une lettre d'un de ses amis de Boulogne-sur-Mer, dans laquelle on lit le passage suivant. Cette lettre est datée du 26 juillet 1856.

« Mon fils, depuis que je l'ai magnétisé par les ordres de nos Esprits, est devenu un médium très rare, du moins c'est ce qu'il m'a révélé dans son état somnambulique dans lequel je l'avais mis sur sa demande le 14 mai dernier, et quatre ou cinq fois depuis.

Pour moi, il est hors de doute que mon fils éveillé converse librement avec les Esprits qu'il désire, par l'intermédiaire de son guide, qu'il appelle familièrement son ami; qu'à sa volonté il se transporte en Esprit où il désire, et je vais vous en citer un fait dont j'ai les preuves écrites entre les mains.

Il y a juste aujourd'hui un mois, nous étions tous deux dans la salle à manger. Je lisais le cours de magnétisme de M. Du Potet, quand mon fils prend le livre et le feuillette; arrivé à un certain endroit, son guide lui dit à l'oreille: Lis cela. C'était l'aventure d'un docteur d'Amérique dont l'Esprit avait visité un ami à 15 ou 20 lieues de là pendant qu'il dormait. Après l'avoir lu, mon fils dit: Je voudrais bien faire un petit voyage semblable. - Eh bien! où veux-tu aller? lui dit son guide. - A Londres, répond mon fils, voir mes amis, et il désigna ceux qu'il voudrait visiter.

C'est demain dimanche, lui fut-il répondu; tu n'es pas obligé de te lever de bonne heure pour travailler. Tu t'endormiras à huit heures et tu iras voyager à Londres jusqu'à huit heures et demie. Vendredi prochain tu recevras une lettre de tes amis, qui te feront des reproches d'être resté si peu de temps avec eux.

Effectivement, le lendemain matin à l'heure indiquée il s'endormit d'un sommeil de plomb; à huit heures et demie je l'éveillai, il ne se rappelait de rien; de mon côté, je ne dis pas un mot, attendant la suite.

Le vendredi suivant, je travaillais à une de mes machines et, suivant mon habitude, je fumais, car c'était après déjeuner; mon fils regarde la fumée de ma pipe et me dit: Tiens! il y a une lettre dans ta fumée. - Comment vois-tu une lettre dans ma fumée? - Tu vas le voir, reprend-il, car voilà le facteur qui l'apporte. Effectivement, le facteur vint remettre une lettre de Londres dans laquelle les amis de mon fils lui faisaient un reproche de n'avoir passé avec eux que quelques instants, le dimanche précédent de huit heures à huit heures et demie, avec une foule de détails qu'il serait trop long de répéter ici, entre autres le fait singulier d'avoir déjeuné avec eux. J'ai la lettre, comme je vous l'ai dit, qui prouve que je n'invente rien. »

Le fait ci-dessus ayant été raconté, un des assistants dit que l'histoire rapporte plusieurs faits semblables. Il cite saint Alphonse de Ligurie qui fut canonisé avant le temps voulu pour s'être ainsi montré simultanément en deux endroits différents, ce qui passa pour un miracle.

Saint Antoine de Padoue était en Espagne, et au moment où il prêchait, son père (à Padoue) allait au supplice accusé d'un meurtre. A ce moment saint Antoine paraît, démontre l'innocence de son père, et fait connaître le véritable criminel, qui plus tard subit le châtiment. Il fut constaté que saint Antoine prêchait dans le même moment en Espagne.

Saint Alphonse de Ligurie ayant été évoqué, il lui fut adressé les questions suivantes:

1. Le fait pour lequel vous avez été canonisé est-il réel? - R. Oui.

2. Ce phénomène est-il exceptionnel? - R. Non; il peut se présenter chez tous les individus dématérialisés.

3. Etait-ce un juste motif de vous canoniser? - R. Oui, puisque par ma vertu, je m'étais élevé vers Dieu; sans cela, je n'eusse pu me transporter dans deux endroits à la fois.

4. Tous les individus chez lesquels ce phénomène se présente, mériteraient-ils d'être canonisés?- R. Non, parce que tous ne sont pas également vertueux.

5. Pourriez-vous nous donner l'explication de ce phénomène? - R. Oui; l'homme, lorsqu'il s'est complètement dématérialisé par sa vertu, qu'il a élevé son âme vers Dieu, peut apparaître en deux endroits à la fois, voici comment. L'Esprit incarné, en sentant le sommeil venir, peut demander à Dieu de se transporter dans un lieu quelconque. Son Esprit, ou son âme, comme vous voudrez l'appeler, abandonne alors son corps, suivi d'une partie de son périsprit, et laisse la matière immonde dans un état voisin de la mort. Je dis voisin de la mort, parce qu'il est resté dans le corps un lien qui rattache le périsprit et l'âme à la matière, et ce lien ne peut être défini. Le corps apparaît donc dans l'endroit demandé. Je crois que c'est tout ce que vous désirez savoir.

6. Ceci ne nous donne pas l'explication de la visibilité et de la tangibilité du périsprit. - R. L'Esprit se trouvant dégagé de la matière suivant son degré d'élévation, peut se rendre tangible à la matière.

7. Cependant certaines apparitions tangibles de mains et autres parties du corps, appartiennent évidemment à des Esprits d'un ordre inférieur. - R. Ce sont des Esprits supérieurs qui se servent d'Esprits inférieurs pour prouver la chose.

8. Le sommeil du corps est-il indispensable pour que l'Esprit apparaisse en d'autres endroits? - R. L'âme peut se diviser lorsqu'elle se sent portée dans un lieu différent de celui où se trouve le corps.

9. Un homme étant plongé dans le sommeil tandis que son Esprit apparaît ailleurs, qu'arriverait-il s'il était réveillé subitement? - R. Cela n'arriverait pas, parce que si quelqu'un avait l'intention de l'éveiller, l'Esprit rentrerait dans le corps, et préviendrait l'intention, attendu que l'Esprit lit dans la pensée.

Tacite rapporte un fait analogue:

Pendant les mois que Vespasien passa dans Alexandrie pour attendre le retour périodique des vents d'été et la saison où la mer devient sûre, plusieurs prodiges arrivèrent, par où se manifesta la faveur du ciel et l'intérêt que les dieux semblaient prendre à ce prince...

Ces prodiges redoublèrent dans Vespasien le désir de visiter le séjour sacré du dieu, pour le consulter au sujet de l'empire. Il ordonne que le temple soit fermé à tout le monde: entré lui-même et tout entier à ce qu'allait prononcer l'oracle, il aperçoit derrière lui un des principaux Egyptiens, nommé Basilide, qu'il savait être retenu malade à plusieurs journées d'Alexandrie. Il s'informe aux prêtres si Basilide est venu ce jour-là dans le temple; il s'informe aux passants si on l'a vu dans la ville, enfin il envoie des hommes à cheval, et il s'assure que dans ce moment- là même il était à quatre-vingts milles de distance. Alors, il ne douta plus que la vision ne fût surnaturelle, et le nom de Basilide lui tint lieu d'oracle. (TACITE. Histoires, liv. IV, chap. 81 et 82. Traduction de Burnouf.)

Depuis que cette communication nous a été faite, plusieurs faits du même genre, dont la source est authentique, nous ont été racontés, et dans le nombre il en est de tout récents, qui ont lieu, pour ainsi dire, au milieu de nous, et qui se sont présentés avec les circonstances les plus singulières. Les explications auxquelles ils ont donné lieu élargissent singulièrement le champ des observations psychologiques.

La question des hommes doubles, reléguée jadis parmi les contes fantastiques, paraît avoir ainsi un fond de vérité. Nous y reviendrons très prochainement.
