1. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corner of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their rewards. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask Him (Matthew, 6: 5-8).

2. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in Heaven may forgive you your trespasses (Mark, 11:25 & 26).

And He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself God, I thank ye, that lam not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers or even as this publican. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto Heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful unto me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted (Luke, 18: 9-14).

4. Jesus clearly defined the quality of prayer. He said that when you pray you should not make yourself conspicuous, but rather pray in secret. Do not prolong your prayers because it is not by the multiplicity of the words that you will be heard, but by their sincerity. Before praying, if you have anything against another, forgive them, seeing that prayer is not pleasing to God if it does not come from a heart cleansed of all sentiments which are contrary to charity. Finally, pray with humility, as did the Publican, and not with pride as did the Pharisee. Look at your defects, not at your qualities, and if you compare yourself to others, look for what is bad in yourself (See chapter 10, items 7 & 8).

Je vous dis en vérité, ils ont reçu leur récompense. - Mais lorsque vous voudrez prier, entrez dans votre chambre, et la porte étant fermée, priez votre Père dans le secret ; et votre Père, qui voit ce qui se passe dans le secret, vous en rendra la récompense.

N'affectez point de prier beaucoup dans vos prières, comme font les Païens, qui s'imaginent que c'est par la multitude des paroles qu'ils sont exaucés. - Ne vous rendez donc pas semblables à eux, parce que votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin avant que vous le lui demandiez. (Saint Matthieu, ch. VI, v. de 5 à 8.)

Lorsque vous vous présentez pour prier, si vous avez quelque chose contre quelqu'un, pardonnez-lui, afin que votre Père, qui est dans les cieux, vous pardonne aussi vos péchés. - Si vous ne pardonnez, votre Père, qui est dans les cieux, ne vous pardonnera point non plus vos péchés. (Saint Marc, ch. XI, v. 25, 26.)

3. Il dit aussi cette parabole à quelques-uns qui mettaient leur confiance en eux-mêmes, comme étant justes, et méprisaient les autres :

Deux hommes montèrent au temple pour prier ; l'un était pharisien et l'autre publicain. - Le pharisien, se tenant debout, priait ainsi en lui-même : Mon Dieu, je vous rends grâce de ce que je ne suis point comme le reste des hommes, qui sont voleurs, injustes et adultères, ni même comme ce publicain. Je jeûne deux fois la semaine ; je donne la dîme de tout ce que je possède.

Le publicain, au contraire, se tenant éloigné, n'osait pas même lever les yeux au ciel ; mais il frappait sa poitrine, en disant : Mon Dieu, ayez pitié de moi, qui suis un pécheur.

Je vous déclare que celui-ci s'en retourna chez lui justifié, et non pas l'autre ; car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé. (Saint Luc, chap. XVIII, v. de 9 à 14.)

4. Les qualités de la prière sont clairement définies par Jésus ; lorsque vous priez, dit-il, ne vous mettez point en évidence, mais priez dans le secret ; n'affectez point de prier beaucoup, car ce n'est pas par la multiplicité des paroles que vous serez exaucés, mais par leur sincérité ; avant de prier, si vous avez quelque chose contre quelqu'un, pardonnez-lui, car la prière ne saurait être agréable à Dieu si elle ne part d'un coeur purifié de tout sentiment contraire à la charité ; priez enfin avec humilité, comme le publicain, et non avec orgueil, comme le pharisien ; examinez vos défauts et non vos qualités, et si vous vous comparez aux autres, cherchez ce qu'il y a de mal en vous.
