5. The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. And great multitudes were gathered unto Him, so that He went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And He spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up: some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth. And when the sun came up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up, and choked them: but others fell upon good ground,, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear (Matthew, 13:1-9).

Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the Word of the Kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart This is he which received seed by the wayside. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the Word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself but dearth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution Aristech because of the Word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the Word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the Word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the Word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty (Matthew, 13: 18-23).

6. The parable of the sower truly represents the various ways in which we may make use of the teachings from the New Testament. There are so many people for whom these teachings are nothing more than dead words which can be compared to seeds which fall on stony ground and produce no fruits at all.

This parable brings us a no less justifiable application of the different categories of Spiritists. Do we not find symbolised in it those who are only attracted to material phenomena, from which they are unable to learn anything, because they only see it as an object of curiosity? Does it not show us those who seek the brilliance of spirit communication merely to interest themselves as long as it satisfies their imagination and who, after listening to the messages, continue to be just as cold and indifferent as they were before? Then there are those who consider the advice very good and admire it, but only apply it to others and never to themselves. Finally there are those for whom the teachings are as seeds which fall on good soil and produce fruits. 

5. Ce même jour, Jésus, étant sorti de la maison, s'assit auprès de la mer ; - et il s'assembla autour de lui une grande foule de peuple ; c'est pourquoi il monta sur une barque, où il s'assit, tout le peuple se tenant sur le rivage ; - et il leur dit beaucoup de choses en paraboles, leur parlant de cette sorte :

Celui qui sème s'en alla semer ; - et pendant qu'il semait, quelque partie de la semence tomba le long du chemin, et les oiseaux du ciel étant venus la mangèrent.

Une autre tomba dans des lieux pierreux où elle n'avait pas beaucoup de terre ; et elle leva aussitôt, parce que la terre où elle était n'avait pas de profondeur. - Mais le soleil s'étant levé ensuite, elle en fut brûlée ; et comme elle n'avait point de racine, elle sécha.

Une autre tomba dans des épines, et les épines venant à croître l'étouffèrent.

Une autre enfin tomba dans de bonne terre, et elle porta du fruit, quelques grains rendant cent pour un, d'autres soixante, et d'autres trente.

Que celui-là entende, qui a des oreilles pour entendre. (Saint Matthieu, ch. XIII, v. de 1 à 9.)

Ecoutez donc, vous autres, la parabole de celui qui sème.

Quiconque écoute la parole du royaume et n'y fait point d'attention, l'esprit malin vient et enlève ce qui avait été semé dans son coeur ; c'est celui-là qui a reçu la semence le long du chemin.

Celui qui reçoit la semence au milieu des pierres, c'est celui qui écoute la parole, et qui la reçoit à l'heure même avec joie ; - mais il n'a point en soi de racine, et il n'est que pour un temps ; et lorsqu'il survient des traverses et des persécutions à cause de la parole, il en prend aussitôt un sujet de scandale et de chute.

Celui qui reçoit la semence parmi les épines, c'est celui qui entend la parole ; mais ensuite les sollicitudes de ce siècle et l'illusion des richesses étouffent en lui cette parole et la rendent infructueuse.

Mais celui qui reçoit la semence dans une bonne terre, c'est celui qui écoute la parole, qui y fait attention et qui porte du fruit, et rend cent, ou soixante, ou trente pour un. (Saint Matthieu, ch. XIII, v. de 18 à 23.)

6. La parabole de la semence représente parfaitement les nuances qui existent dans la manière de mettre à profit les enseignements de l'Evangile. Combien est-il de gens, en effet, pour lesquels ce n'est qu'une lettre morte qui, pareille à la semence tombée sur le roc, ne produit aucun fruit !

Elle trouve une application non moins juste dans les différentes catégories de spirites. N'est-elle pas l'emblème de ceux qui ne s'attachent qu'aux phénomènes matériels, et n'en tirent aucune conséquence, parce qu'ils n'y voient qu'un objet de curiosité ? de ceux qui ne cherchent que le brillant dans les communications des Esprits, et ne s'y intéressent qu'autant qu'elles satisfont leur imagination, mais qui, après les avoir entendues, sont aussi froids et indifférents qu'auparavant ? qui trouvent les conseils fort bons et les admirent, mais en font l'application aux autres et non à eux-mêmes ? de ceux, enfin, pour qui ces instructions sont comme la semence tombée dans la bonne terre, et produisent des fruits ?
