To the best of our knowledge, Mr. Home has not made appear any other body parts besides the hands.  It has been reported, however, that a general who had died in Crimea appeared to his widow, visible only to her.  We have not been able to confirm the authenticity of that report, since Mr. Home was involved with this case.   As such, we limit ourselves only to what we can prove.

Why hands, instead of feet or head? This is what we ignore, as does Mr. Home.

Questioned about that, the spirits answered that other mediums could make the whole body appear. By the way, this is not the most important aspect: if the hands show up the other parts of the body are not less important, as we shall have the opportunity to see below.

Generally, the appearance of the hand happens initially under the table cloth, by ripples which run over the whole surface. Then it shows on the edges of the cloth which is raised by the hand; at times it comes to rest on the cloth, at the center of the table. On other occasions it grabs an object and takes it under the cloth. This hand, visible to all, is neither airy nor translucent. It has the natural color and opacity; it shows an indefinite termination towards the fist. If someone touches it with precaution, confidence and without a hostile second intention, it offers the resistance, solidity and impression of a live hand; it produces a soft heat comparable to that of a pigeon which may have died about thirty minutes ago. It is not absolutely inert, as it acts, produces movements which are imposed to them or resists, strokes or grabs us. If, on the contrary, we abruptly and by surprise try to grab it, we only find the emptiness.

A visual witness told us the following fact that happened to him:

He held a handbell between his fingers; an invisible hand, in the beginning, and visible later, came to try to take it away; as it was unsuccessful, it tried to pull it to make it slip through the fingers. The traction effort was noticeable, as it would be the one of any human hand. Having tried to violently grab that hand, his hand only found air; on opening the fingers, the handbell remained suspended in the air, slowing going down to rest on the floor.

Sometimes there are multiple hands.

The same witness described the following fact to us:

Several people are sitting down around one of the folding dining tables. Some raps are heard; the table agitates, opens up by itself and through the crease of the table three hands show up: one of normal size, another very large and a third very hairy. They touch and poke each other, shake hands with those around the table and then dissolve.

In the house of one of our friends who had lost a child at an early age, a hand of a newly born baby shows up. Everyone can see and touch it. That child sits on her mom’s lap who distinctly feels the impression of the whole body on her knees.

The hand frequently comes to rest on you. Then you see it and if not, it feels the pressure of the fingers. At times it strokes you; on other occasions it pinches you to the point of pain. In the presence of several people, Mr. Home felt that his fist was grabbed and the audience could see that his skin was stretched. An instant later, he felt someone biting him; the impression of the teeth remained for over an hour.

The hand that shows up can also write. Sometimes it stops at the center of the table, takes up a pencil and writes on a piece of paper previously prepared. Most of the time, however, it takes the paper under the table and returns it completely written. If the hand turns invisible the text seems to be produced by itself. Answers to multiple questions can be obtained in such a way.

Another not less notable kind of manifestation, explained by what we have just described, is that of the musical instruments which play by themselves. These are, in general, pianos or accordions. In such cases one can see the keyboard as well as the bellows moving. The hand that plays is sometimes visible, sometimes invisible. The aria that is played can be known and even requested. If the invisible artist is left alone, he produces harmonious tunes which resemble the smooth melody of a wind harp.

In the house of one of our members, where these phenomena were produced many times, the manifesting spirit was that of a young man who died some time ago, a friend of the family, who revealed an outstanding musical talent when alive. The nature of the arias he used to play left no doubt about his identity in all of those who knew him.

The most extraordinary fact, in such kind of manifestation, is not, in our opinion, the apparition. If it were always airy it would be compatible with the nature we attribute to the spirits. Well, nothing would oppose to the idea of having that kind of matter perceptible to our sight, by some sort of condensation, without losing its airy property. What is really strange is the solidification of that very matter, sufficiently resistant to leave a visible impression in our organs. In the next issue we will give an explanation about this singular phenomenon, according to the teachings of the spirits. Today we shall limit ourselves to the deduction of a consequence relatively to the spontaneous playing of musical instruments. In fact, since the eventual tangibility of that ethereal matter is an attested fact and, since the hand, visible or not, offers sufficient resistance to exert pressure over the solid bodies, it is not surprising that it can apply sufficient pressure to touch the keyboard of a musical instrument. Besides, not less positive facts demonstrate that the hand belongs to an intelligent being. It is not strange than the fact that such an intelligence manifest itself by the means of musical notes, since it can manifest by writing or drawing.   

Once entering into such an order of ideas, the raps, the motion of the objects and all spiritist phenomena of the material type, are explained very naturally. 

M. Home.

Il n'est pas à notre connaissance que M. Home ait fait apparaître, du moins visiblement pour tout le monde, d'autres parties du corps que des mains. On cite cependant un général mort en Crimée, qui serait apparu à sa veuve et visible pour elle seule; mais nous n'avons pas été à même de constater la réalité du fait, en ce qui concerne surtout l'intervention de M. Home dans cette circonstance. Nous nous bornons à ce que nous pouvons affirmer. Pourquoi des mains plutôt que des pieds ou une tête? C'est ce que nous ignorons et ce qu'il ignore lui-même. Les Esprits interrogés à ce sujet ont répondu que d'autres médiums pourraient faire apparaître la totalité du corps; du reste, ce n'est pas là le point le plus important; si les mains seules apparaissent, les autres parties du corps n'en sont pas moins patentes, comme on le verra tout à l'heure.

L'apparition d'une main se manifeste généralement en premier lieu sous le tapis de la table, par les ondulations qu'elle produit en en parcourant toute la surface; puis elle se montre sur le bord du tapis qu'elle soulève; quelquefois elle vient se poser sur le tapis au milieu même de la table; souvent elle saisit un objet qu'elle emporte dessous. Cette main, visible pour tout le monde, n'est ni vaporeuse ni translucide; elle a la couleur et l'opacité naturelles; au poignet, elle se termine par le vague. Si on la touche avec précaution, confiance et sans arrière-pensée hostile, elle offre la résistance, la solidité et l'impression d'une main vivante; sa chaleur est douce, moite, et comparable à celle d'un pigeon tué depuis une demi-heure. Elle n'est point inerte, car elle agit, se prête aux mouvements qu'on lui imprime, ou résiste, vous caresse ou vous étreint. Si, au contraire, vous voulez la saisir brusquement et par surprise, vous ne touchez que le vide. Un témoin oculaire nous a raconté le fait suivant qui lui est personnel. Il tenait entre ses doigts une sonnette de table; une main, d'abord invisible, puis après parfaitement apparente, vint la prendre en faisant des efforts pour la lui arracher; n'y pouvant parvenir, elle passa par-dessus pour la faire glisser; l'effort de traction était aussi sensible que si c'eût été une main humaine; ayant voulu saisir vivement cette main, la sienne ne rencontra que l'air; ayant écarté les doigts, la sonnette resta suspendue dans l'espace et vint lentement se poser sur le parquet.

Quelquefois il y a plusieurs mains. Le même témoin nous a rapporté le fait suivant. Plusieurs personnes étaient réunies autour d'une de ces tables de salle à manger qui se séparent en deux. Des coups sont frappés; la table s'agite, s'ouvre d'elle-même, et, à travers la fente, apparaissent trois mains, l'une de grandeur naturelle, une autre très grande, et une troisième toute velue; on les touche, on les palpe, elles vous serrent, puis s'évanouissent. Chez un de nos amis qui avait perdu un enfant en bas âge, c'est la main d'un enfant nouveau-né qui apparaît; tout le monde peut la voir et la toucher; cet enfant se pose sur sa mère, qui sent distinctement l'impression de tout le corps sur ses genoux.

Souvent la main vient se poser sur vous, vous la voyez, ou, si vous ne la voyez pas, vous sentez la pression des doigts; quelquefois elle vous caresse, d'autres fois elle vous pince jusqu'à la douleur. M. Home, en présence de plusieurs personnes, se sentit ainsi saisir le poignet, et les assistants purent voir la peau tirée. Un instant après il se sentit mordre, et la trace de l'empreinte de deux dents fut visiblement marquée pendant plus d'une heure.

La main qui apparaît peut aussi écrire. Quelquefois elle se pose au milieu de la table, prend le crayon et trace des caractères sur le papier disposé à cet effet. Le plus souvent elle emporte le papier sous la table et le rapporte tout écrit. Si la main demeure invisible, l'écriture semble s'être produite toute seule. On obtient par ce moyen des réponses aux diverses questions que l'on peut adresser.

Un autre genre de manifestations non moins remarquable, mais qui s'explique par ce que nous venons de dire, est celui des instruments de musique jouant seuls. Ce sont ordinairement des pianos ou des accordéons. Dans cette circonstance, on voit distinctement les touches s'agiter et le soufflet se mouvoir. La main qui joue est tantôt visible, tantôt invisible; l'air qui se fait entendre peut être un air connu exécuté sur la demande qui en est faite. Si l'artiste invisible est laissé à lui-même, il produit des accords harmonieux, dont l'ensemble rappelle la vague et suave mélodie de la harpe éolienne. Chez un de nos abonnés où ces phénomènes se sont produits maintes fois, l'Esprit qui se manifestait ainsi était celui d'un jeune homme mort depuis quelque temps et ami de la famille, et qui de son vivant avait un remarquable talent comme musicien; la nature des airs qu'il faisait entendre de préférence ne pouvait laisser aucun doute sur son identité pour les personnes qui l'avaient connu.

Le fait le plus extraordinaire dans ce genre de manifestations n'est pas, à notre avis, celui de l'apparition. Si cette apparition était toujours aériforme, elle s'accorderait avec la nature éthéréenne que nous attribuons aux Esprits; or, rien ne s'opposerait à ce que cette matière éthérée devînt perceptible à la vue par une sorte de condensation, sans perdre sa propriété vaporeuse. Ce qu'il y a de plus étrange, c'est la solidification de cette même matière, assez résistante pour laisser une empreinte visible sur nos organes. Nous donnerons, dans notre prochain numéro, l'explication de ce singulier phénomène telle qu'elle résulte de l'enseignement même des Esprits. Aujourd'hui, nous nous bornerons à en déduire une conséquence relative au jeu spontané des instruments de musique. En effet, dès l'instant que la tangibilité temporaire de cette matière éthérée est un fait acquis, que dans cet état une main, apparente ou non, offre assez de résistance pour faire une pression sur les corps solides, il n'y a rien d'étonnant à ce qu'elle puisse exercer une pression suffisante pour faire mouvoir les touches d'un instrument. D'autre part, des faits non moins positifs prouvent que cette main appartient à un être intelligent; rien d'étonnant non plus à ce que cette intelligence se manifeste par des sons musicaux, comme elle peut le faire par l'écriture ou le dessin. Une fois entré dans cet ordre d'idées, les coups frappés, le mouvement des objets et tous les phénomènes spirites de l'ordre matériel s'expliquent tout naturellement.
