1. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke unto you, and learn of me, for l am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light - (Matthew, 11: 28-30).

2. All sufferings such as miseries, deceptions, physical pain and loss of loved ones will find consolation from faith in the future and from confidence in God's justice, all of which Christ came to teach Man. On the other hand, for those who expect nothing after this life or who simply doubt, afflictions will seem heavier to them as they do not have any hope of mitigating their bitterness. This is what prompted Jesus to say: "Come unto me all who are fatigued and I will give you rest."

Meanwhile, the assistance and happiness promised to the afflicted depends on one condition, which is to be found in the Law He taught. His yoke is the observance of this Law, but the yoke is light and the Law gentle because it only imposes love and charity as its obligations. 

1. Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes affligés et qui êtes chargés, et je vous soulagerai. - Prenez mon joug sur vous, et apprenez de moi que je suis doux et humble de coeur, et vous trouverez le repos de vos âmes ; car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau est léger. (Saint Matthieu, ch. XI, v. 28, 29, 30.)

2. Toutes les souffrances : misères, déceptions, douleurs physiques, pertes d'êtres chéris, trouvent leur consolation dans la foi en l'avenir, dans la confiance en la justice de Dieu, que le Christ est venu enseigner aux hommes. Sur celui, au contraire, qui n'attend rien après cette vie, ou qui doute simplement, les afflictions pèsent de tout leur poids, et nulle espérance ne vient en adoucir l'amertume. Voilà ce qui fait dire à Jésus : Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués, et je vous soulagerai.

Cependant Jésus met une condition à son assistance, et à la félicité qu'il promet aux affligés ; cette condition est dans la loi qu'il enseigne ; son joug est l'observation de cette loi ; mais ce joug est léger et cette loi est douce, puisqu'ils imposent pour devoir l'amour et la charité.
