10. The false prophets are not to be found solely amongst incarnates. They are also to be found in even greater numbers amongst the prideful Spirits, who by appearing to be all love and charity, sow disunion and hold back the work of emancipating humanity by infiltrating their absurd doctrines, after having gained a medium's acceptance of them. And in order to further fascinate those whom they desire to delude, so as to give more weight to their theories, they appropriate without scruples those names which Man pronounces only with great respect.

It is these Spirits who scatter a tumult of antagonism amongst groups, impel them to isolate themselves from all others, and look upon them with suspicion. This situation alone is enough to unmask them, since by so proceeding they are the first to offer a clear denial of who they claim to be. Blind therefore are those who allow themselves to fall for so great a hoax.

But there are many other ways in which they may be recognised. The Spirits of this particular category, to which they say they belong, have to be not only very good but also eminently rational. Well then, put all their doctrines through the test of reason and good sense and see what you have left. You will then agree with me that every time a Spirit indicates things of a utopian, childish, impracticable or ridiculous nature, or formulates a dogma, which the most rudimentary notions of science contradict, as a solution for the problems of humanity, or as a means of achieving their transformation, then these ideas can only come from a very ignorant or lying Spirit.

On the other hand, you may be sure that if the individual does not always appreciate the truth, it is appreciated by the good sense of the masses, which constitutes yet one more criterion. If two principles contradict each other, we can find the measure of value inherent in both by verifying which of the two generates a greater echo and sympathy. Apart from the fact that it would be illogical to admit to oneself that any doctrine whose number of adepts progressively diminishes is more truthful than that of another whose followers continually increase. In desiring that the truth reaches everyone, God has not confined it to a narrow circle, but has made it appear in all places, so that the light shines alongside the darkness.

Repel all those Spirits who present themselves as exclusive counsellors, preaching separation and isolation. They are almost always vain and mediocre Spirits, who seek to impose and dictate to weak and credulous persons by lavishing exaggerated praise upon them, with the aim of fascinating and so dominating them. These are generally Spirits eager for power, who having been despots both publicly or in their own homes, still continue to look for victims to tyrannize, even after death. In general, mistrust all communications which have a mystical and singular character or those which perscribe excentric acts and ceremonies. In all of these cases there is always legitimate motive for suspicion.

Equally you may be sure that when a truth is to be revealed to mankind it is, by way of saying, instantly communicated to all serious groups who have at their disposal serious mediums, and not only to one group at the exclusion of all others. No one can be a perfect medium if they become obsessed, and there is manifest obsession when a medium is only able to receive communication from one specific Spirit, however elevated that spirit pretends to be. Consequently, every medium and all groups who believe themselves to be privileged by reason of the communications they alone obtain, and who moreover, are subject to practises bordering on superstition, undoubtedly find themselves caught up in a well characterized obsession; above all, when the dominating Spirit swaggers under a name which both incarnates and discarnates should honour and respect and not allow reputations to be compromised in this manner.

It is incontestable that by submitting to the crucible of reason and logic all the facts and communications received from Spirit, it becomes an easy matter to reject the errors and absurdities. A single medium may become fascinated or a group deluded; but through severe verification of what is occurring in other groups, the acquiring of knowledge within the subject matter, the analysis of all communications received by the principal mediums of each group, together with the use of logic and the verification of authenticity whenever possible of the most serious Spirit communicators, it is possible to render justice to all falsehoods and trickery from any band of deceiving or malicious Spirits. - ERASTUS, disciple of Saint Paul (Paris, 1862).

Les faux prophètes ne sont pas seulement parmi les incarnés ; ils sont aussi, et en bien plus grand nombre, parmi les Esprits orgueilleux qui, sous de faux-semblants d'amour et de charité, sèment la désunion et retardent l'oeuvre émancipatrice de l'humanité, en jetant à la traverse leurs systèmes absurdes qu'ils font accepter par leurs médiums ; et pour mieux fasciner ceux qu'ils veulent abuser, pour donner plus de poids à leurs théories, ils se parent sans scrupule de noms que les hommes ne prononcent qu'avec respect.

Ce sont eux qui sèment des ferments d'antagonisme entre les groupes, qui les poussent à s'isoler les uns des autres, et à se voir d'un mauvais oeil. Cela seul suffirait pour les démasquer ; car, en agissant ainsi, ils donnent eux-mêmes le plus formel démenti à ce qu'ils prétendent être. Aveugles donc sont les hommes qui se laissent prendre à un piège aussi grossier.

Mais il y a bien d'autres moyens de les reconnaître. Des Esprits de l'ordre auquel ils disent appartenir, doivent être non seulement très bons, mais, en outre, éminemment rationnels. Eh bien, passez leurs systèmes au tamis de la raison et du bon sens, et vous verrez ce qui en restera. Convenez donc avec moi que, toutes les fois qu'un Esprit indique, comme remède aux maux de l'humanité, ou comme moyens d'arriver à sa transformation, des choses utopiques et impraticables, des mesures puériles et ridicules ; quand il formule un système contredit par les plus vulgaires notions de la science, ce ne peut être qu'un Esprit ignorant et menteur.

D'un autre côté, croyez bien que si la vérité n'est pas toujours appréciée par les individus, elle l'est toujours par le bon sens des masses, et c'est encore là un critérium. Si deux principes se contredisent, vous aurez la mesure de leur valeur intrinsèque en cherchant celui qui trouve le plus d'échos et de sympathies ; il serait illogique, en effet, d'admettre qu'une doctrine qui verrait diminuer le nombre de ses partisans fût plus vraie que celle qui voit les siens s'augmenter. Dieu, voulant que la vérité arrive à tous, ne la confine pas dans un cercle restreint : il la fait surgir sur différents points, afin que partout la lumière soit à côté des ténèbres.

Repoussez impitoyablement tous ces Esprits qui se donnent comme conseils exclusifs, en prêchant la division et l'isolement. Ce sont presque toujours des Esprits vaniteux et médiocres, qui tendent à s'imposer aux hommes faibles et crédules, en leur prodiguant des louanges exagérées, afin de les fasciner et de les tenir sous leur domination. Ce sont généralement des Esprits affamés de pouvoir, qui, despotes publics ou privés de leur vivant, veulent avoir encore des victimes à tyranniser après leur mort. En général, défiez-vous des communications qui portent un caractère de mysticisme et d'étrangeté, ou qui prescrivent des cérémonies et des actes bizarres ; il y a toujours alors un motif légitime de suspicion.

D'un autre côté, croyez bien que lorsqu'une vérité doit être révélée à l'humanité, elle est pour ainsi dire instantanément communiquée dans tous les groupes sérieux qui possèdent de sérieux médiums, et non pas à tels ou tels, à l'exclusion des autres. Nul n'est parfait médium s'il est obsédé, et il y a obsession manifeste lorsqu'un médium n'est apte qu'à recevoir les communications d'un Esprit spécial, si haut que celui-ci cherche à se placer lui-même. En conséquence, tout médium, tout groupe qui se croient privilégiés par des communications que seuls ils peuvent recevoir, et qui, d'autre part, sont assujettis à des pratiques qui frisent la superstition, sont indubitablement sous le coup d'une obsession des mieux caractérisées, surtout quand l'Esprit dominateur se targue d'un nom que tous, Esprits et incarnés, nous devons honorer et respecter, et ne pas laisser commettre à tout propos.

Il est incontestable qu'en soumettant au creuset de la raison et de la logique toutes les données et toutes les communications des Esprits, il sera facile de repousser l'absurdité et l'erreur. Un médium peut être fasciné, un groupe abusé ; mais le contrôle sévère des autres groupes, mais la science acquise, et la haute autorité morale des chefs de groupe, mais des communications des principaux médiums qui reçoivent un cachet de logique et d'authenticité de nos meilleurs Esprits, feront rapidement justice de ces dictées mensongères et astucieuses émanées d'une tourbe d'Esprits trompeurs ou méchants.
