1. For the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because lam good? So the last shall be first and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen (Matthew, 20: 1-16. Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un père de famille, qui sortit dès le grand matin, afin de louer des ouvriers pour travailler à sa vigne ; - étant convenu avec les ouvriers qu'ils auraient un denier pour leur journée, il les envoya à la vigne. - Il sortit encore sur la troisième heure du jour, et en ayant vu d'autres qui se tenaient dans la place sans rien faire, - leur dit : Allez-vous-en aussi, vous autres, à ma vigne, et je vous donnerai ce qui sera raisonnable ; - et ils s'en allèrent. Il sortit encore sur la sixième et sur la neuvième heure du jour, et fit la même chose. - Et étant sorti sur la onzième heure, il en trouva d'autres qui étaient là sans rien faire, auxquels il dit : Pourquoi demeurez-vous là tout le long du jour sans travailler ? - C'est, lui dirent-ils, que personne ne nous a loués, et il leur dit : Allez-vous-en aussi, vous autres, à ma vigne.

Le soir étant venu, le maître de la vigne dit à celui qui avait le soin de ses affaires : Appelez les ouvriers, et payez-les, en commençant depuis les derniers jusqu'aux premiers. - Ceux donc qui n'étaient venus à la vigne que vers la onzième heure s'étant approchés, reçurent chacun un denier. - Ceux qui avaient été loués les premiers venant à leur tour, crurent qu'on leur donnerait davantage, mais ils ne reçurent non plus qu'un denier chacun ; - et en le recevant ils murmuraient contre le père de famille, - en disant : Ces derniers n'ont travaillé qu'une heure et vous les rendez égaux à nous qui avons porté le poids du jour et de la chaleur.

Mais pour réponse il dit à l'un d'eux : Mon ami, je ne vous fais point de tort ; n'êtes-vous pas convenu avec moi d'un denier pour votre journée ? Prenez ce qui vous appartient, et vous en allez ; pour moi, je veux donner à ce dernier autant qu'à vous. - Ne m'est-il donc pas permis de faire ce que je veux ? et votre oeil est-il mauvais, parce que je suis bon ?

Ainsi, les derniers seront les premiers, et les premiers seront les derniers, parce qu'il y en a beaucoup d'appelés et peu d'élus. (Saint Matthieu, ch. XX, v. de 1 à 16. Voir aussi : Parabole du festin de noces, ch. XVIII, nº 1.)
