Remark - Who could recognise the excellent and beneficent man called Saint Vincent de Paul in language so loose and in thoughts so void of common sense, as the foregoing? What does the spirit mean by saying "No, one does not 'change one's religion", "one falls from folly and domination into wisdom and liberty?" With his "bullets which are not yet cast," this spirit would seem to be the same as that of the trooper who signed Napoleon in the preceding communication. In regard to the two following quotations, the absurdity of signing such messages with such a name, is too obvious to call for comment.

Non, on ne peut pas changer de religion quand on n'en a pas une qui puisse à la fois satisfaire le sens commun et l'intelligence qu'on a, et qui puisse surtout donner à l'homme des consolations présentes. Non, on ne change pas de religion, on tombe de l'ineptie et de la domination dans la sagesse et dans la liberté. Allez, allez, notre petite armée ! allez, et ne craignez pas les balles ennemies : celles qui doivent vous tuer ne sont pas encore faites, si vous êtes toujours du fond du coeur dans la voie de Dieu, c'est-à-dire si vous voulez toujours combattre pacifiquement et victorieusement pour l'aisance et la liberté.

Remarque. Qui reconnaîtrait saint Vincent de Paul à ce langage, à ces pensées décousues et dépourvues de sens ? Que signifient ces mots : Non, on ne change pas de religion, on tombe de l'ineptie et de la domination dans la sagesse et dans la liberté ? Avec ses balles qui ne sont pas encore faites, nous soupçonnons fort cet Esprit d'être le même que celui qui a signé ci-dessus Napoléon.
