"Why do you not begin your sittings with a general invocation, a sort of appeal to the higher spheres, that may dispose your minds to serious thought? Without seriousness of thought and purpose, only frivolous communications will be obtained. Good spirits come only to those who attract them by their fervour and sincerity; a fact which is not yet sufficiently comprehended in your world. We see your labours with pleasure, and are ready to aid you, but on condition that you second our action by the action of your wills, and that you show yourselves equal to the mission you are called upon to fulfil. Be united; you will thus be too strong for evil spirits to prevail against you. God approves the simple minded; we do not mean simpletons, but those who make a voluntary abnegation of self; and who devote themselves to His service without vanity. If you would become a focus of light for all mankind, you must learn to distinguish truth from error. Be careful to sow only good seed, unmixed with tares; for tares stifle the good seed and prevent it from growing up, and they who have sown them will be held responsible for the mischief done by them; in other words, you, who are called to spread the truth, will have to answer for the false doctrines you may have propagated. Let all mediums, therefore, pray to God unceasingly for assistance and guidance."

"SAINT AUGUSTINE"

(Saint Augustine, having been requested to dictate a general formula of evocation, replied as follows:

"We cannot give you any fixed and absolute formula God is too great to attach importance to words; He looks only to the thought. You must not suppose that the pronouncing of certain words can suffice to keep off evil spirits, or that there can be any virtue in verbal forms that are recited as a mere matter of habit. The efficacy of any prayer, whether clothed in impromptu language or in an accepted form, depends on the sincerity of the sentiment it expresses, and the unanimity of those by whom it is offered; no one whose heart is not in his prayer could profit by it, or make it profitable to others. Draw up a formula, if you will, and then submit it to me; and I will help you."

Remark - Acting upon the advice thus given, the following formula was accordingly drawn up, with the aid of Saint Augustine and other spirits; it has met with wide approval, and has been generally adopted for the opening of spiritist meetings:

"We pray Almighty God to send good spirits to assist us, to keep away those who might lead us into error, and to give us the light we need for distinguishing truth from imposture. May all malevolent spirits who might create disunion among us be kept away; should any such obtain entrance here, we adjure them, in the name of God, to retire.

"Good spirits who preside over our labours, deign to come to us and instruct us!

Render us docile to your counsels, and aid us to subordinate all personal sentiments to the general zeal.

"We especially request the spirit of ... our spirit protector; to be with us and to give us his help.”

Pourquoi ne commencez-vous pas vos séances par une invocation générale, une sorte de prière qui disposerait au recueillement ? car, sachez-le bien, sans le recueillement vous n'aurez que des communications légères ; les bons Esprits ne vont que là où on les appelle avec ferveur et sincérité. Voilà ce qu'on ne comprend pas assez ; c'est donc à vous à donner l'exemple ; à vous qui, si vous le voulez, pouvez devenir une des colonnes de l'édifice nouveau. Nous voyons vos travaux avec plaisir, et nous vous aidons, mais c'est à la condition que vous nous seconderez de votre côté, et que vous vous montrerez à la hauteur de la mission que vous êtes appelés à remplir. Formez donc un faisceau, et vous serez forts, et les mauvais Esprits ne prévaudront pas contre vous. Dieu aime les simples d'esprit, ce qui ne veut pas dire les niais, mais ceux qui font abnégation d'eux-mêmes et qui viennent à lui sans orgueil. Vous pouvez devenir un foyer de lumière pour l'humanité ; sachez donc distinguer le bon grain de l'ivraie ; ne semez que le bon grain, et gardez-vous de répandre de l'ivraie, car l'ivraie empêchera le bon grain de pousser, et vous seriez responsables de tout le mal qu'elle aura fait ; de même vous seriez responsables des mauvaises doctrines que vous pourriez propager. Souvenez-vous qu'un jour le monde peut avoir l'oeil sur vous ; faites donc que rien ne ternisse l'éclat des bonnes choses qui sortiront de votre sein ; c'est pourquoi nous vous recommandons de prier Dieu de vous assister.

SAINT AUGUSTIN

Saint Augustin, prié de vouloir bien dicter une formule d'invocation générale, répondit :

Vous savez qu'il n'y a pas de formule absolue : Dieu est trop grand pour attacher plus d'importance aux mots qu'à la pensée. Or, ne croyez pas qu'il suffise de prononcer quelques paroles pour écarter les mauvais Esprits ; gardez-vous surtout d'en faire une de ces formules banales que l'on récite pour l'acquit de sa conscience ; son efficacité est dans la sincérité du sentiment qui la dicte ; elle est surtout dans l'unanimité de l'intention, car aucun de ceux qui ne s'y associeraient pas de coeur ne saurait en bénéficier, ni en faire bénéficier les autres. Rédigez-la donc vous-même, et soumettez-la-moi si vous voulez ; je vous aiderai.

Nota. La formule suivante d'invocation générale a été rédigée avec le concours de l'Esprit qui l'a complétée en plusieurs points.

«Nous prions Dieu Tout-Puissant de nous envoyer de bons Esprits pour nous assister, et d'éloigner ceux qui pourraient nous induire en erreur ; donnez-nous la lumière nécessaire pour distinguer la vérité de l'imposture.

Ecartez aussi les Esprits malveillants qui pourraient jeter la désunion parmi nous en suscitant l'envie, l'orgueil et la jalousie. Si quelques-uns tentaient de s'introduire ici, au nom de Dieu, nous les adjurons de se retirer.

Bons Esprits qui présidez à nos travaux, daignez venir nous instruire, et rendez-nous dociles à vos conseils. Faites que tout sentiment personnel s'efface en nous devant la pensée du bien général.
